In 1964, the City established the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP). (Article 6 of the Baltimore City Code). CHAP's mission is to enhance and promote the culture and economy of Baltimore through the preservation of buildings, structures, sites and neighborhoods that have aesthetic, historic, and architectural value. The Baltimore City Department of Planning and the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP) are looking for a highly qualified person for the joint position of Executive Director for the CHAP and Chief of the Historical and Architectural Preservation Division of the Baltimore City Department of Planning. The Preservation Division is comprised of five paid staff including the division chief, and the CHAP has 13 Mayoral-appointed volunteer members drawn from residents of Baltimore City with expertise in specific areas of history or historic preservation. 

Masters degree in historic preservation, art history, architectural history, architecture, urban planning, urban studies or a closely related field and five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in performing preservation planning with at least three (3) recent years of experience in 
directing the preservation activities of professional staff; or 
Bachelors degree in historic preservation, art history, architectural history, architecture, urban planning, urban studies or a closely related field and seven (7) years of increasingly responsible experience in performing preservation planning with at least three (3) recent years of experience in 
directing the preservation activities of professional staff. 
Familiarity with local and regional history and preservation practices is desirable, but not required.
