THE POSITION:

These are limited-term positions (lasting less than 2 years) in the Division of Architectural Preservation. The office location is at the Daniel Boone Homestead located in Birdsboro, Pennsylvania. The incumbent conducts surveys, inspections, and documentation of preservation needs and applies preservation construction skills and knowledge of traditional building materials and techniques for the conservation of the historic buildings managed by PHMC.

 

DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

The incumbent:

 

Surveys needs for preservation work at historic sites and museums. Inspects historic site buildings and structures, assesses conditions, develops treatment recommendations, completes survey forms, and prepares reports.

Prioritizes needs and performs preservation trades work such as carpentry, painting, roofing, and masonry to address urgent preservation project needs identified through surveys.

Applies the best current procedures and protocols to ensure that all construction work meets agency standards for preservation and the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties. (36 CFR 67).

Documents all project work, including preparing scope of work, technical specifications, field sketches, drawings, field notes, photographs, and reports.
Provides preservation trade skills training and mentoring for assigned seasonal apprentices.

Required Experience:

Meet the minimum experience and training required for the job: A Bachelor's degree in Architectural History, American History, Historic Preservation, Architectural Conservation or a similar field; and two years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades; OR Two years of post-secondary education and training in the above designated fields of study and four years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades; OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training that includes two years of experience in historic preservation construction work which has directly involved hands-on construction work in the restoration or preservation of historic buildings in one or more skilled trades.
