The Main Street Architect independently performs the full range of professional architectural duties to carry out the architectural design and plan and specification preparation and review aspects of the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) participation in the Michigan Main Street Program.  With knowledge of principles and practices of architecture coupled with historic preservation, the Main Street Architect is required to prepare façade improvement plans, evaluate and inspect building, prepare related reports, provide technical assistance to property owners, plan and conduct design workshops and generally promote good design and historic preservation in Michigan communities. The Main Street Architect is required to conduct trainings on the Main Street Four-Point Approach, evaluate communities readiness for the MMS Program, conduct board or committee trainings and other downtown revitalization related trainings.  The Michigan Main Street program is a partnership between the SHPO and the Downtown and Community Services Division following the four-point approach and principles for downtown revitalization developed by the National Trust for Historic Preservations National Main Street Center.
