Internship Opportunity
Boulder City, NV

Description: Working collaboratively with Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting at least three youth interns to assist with the implementation of interpretation and education programs for Lake Mead National Recreation Area. We encourage youth from a diverse background to apply. These individuals will gain valuable experience in environmental education, interpretation and outreach. Interns will serve alongside park staff contributing to a wide variety of resource management, protection and visitor use projects. This position may require travel throughout the LMNRA, as well as service on weekends and most holidays.


Internship opportunities are available in two term lengths: 450-hours (approximately 13 weeks) and 900-hours (approximately 26 weeks). Compensation details for each term length are articulated below. 



o Living Allowance: 450-hour = $5,000900-hour = $10,500

o AmeriCorps Education Award*: 450-hour = $1,468900-hour = $2,775

o Student Loan Forbearance** 

o Paid Interest Accrual**


* AmeriCorps Education Award may be used for past, present or future educational expenses.

** On qualifying federal student loans



o Starts July 1, 2014 or upon availability; potential for extension pending funding authorization and positive performance review

o Up to 40 hours per week possibly including holidays and weekends; willing to consider part time position


Location: Lake Mead NRA (Boulder City, NV)



o Motivated, self-starter who is detail oriented;

o Flexibility to handle competing and changing priorities;

o Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse public in a variety of forums;

o Ability to speak English and Spanish conversationally, desirable but not required;

o Some college education, desirable but not required;

o Ability to work in harsh and rapidly changing environments;

o Possess clean, valid, state-issued drivers license; and

o Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time terms of service), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
