Restoration Specialist (Full Time)[Position #573].  The Thomas Jefferson Foundation seeks an experienced Restoration Specialist to join the Restoration Department. This position entails hands-on work associated with on-going restoration and conservation projects, performing both exterior and interior cyclical maintenance tasks including painting and cleaning of architectural surfaces, and assisting the Curatorial Department on an as-needed basis moving furnishings and artifacts, hanging pictures, and etc. Keeping accurate written and photographic records of work performed is also expected. 

 

Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Foundation is the private, nonprofit organization that owns and operates Monticello, the home and plantation of Thomas Jefferson, as well as a museum and visitor center, library and academic center, and conference/education center, all to advance its mission of preservation and education. Monticello annually attracts nearly 440,000 on-site, and more than 2 million unique web visitors. With a vision of global engagement, it operates programs, exhibitions and conferences nationally and internationally.

 

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have significant prior experience working on historic structures, including both woodworking and painting, be proficient at using hand and power tools, possess good writing and computer skills, and should also be comfortable interacting with the public on a daily basis while still performing their job efficiently.  Graduation from a recognized preservation program is also regarded as desirable.
