The Montana Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) Cultural Records Assistant assists the SHPO Cultural Records Manager by accepting, organizing, maintaining, and reconciling the official inventory of all recorded cultural resource properties in the state (N = 55,500 properties as of 2014). These records are kept both in permanently stored paper format and in electronic formats as scanned images (OCR PDF files), coded database entries (Oracle), and digitized spatial data records (ESRI ARCMap GIS). Cultural resource properties are understood to include historic, pre-contact (archaeological) periods, and paleontological sites, and to include information of a specialized nature that may also be restricted and confidential.

·         Manages and maintains the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) cultural resource property records (paper and scanned images) as the official state government files of all recorded cultural resource properties in the state.
·         Conducts coding, data entry, digitizing and editing of cultural resource property information into the SHPO Cultural Resource Information System (Oracle database) and into the State Antiquities Geo-database system (ESRI ARCmap GIS).
·         Helps establish site records management policy and procedure and provide technical assistance and outreach for the submission, use, and distribution of SHPO cultural resource site records.
·         Maintains the safety and security of the SHPO cultural resource property records.

  • Preferred candidates will typically have a bachelors or graduate degree in anthropology, history, or historic preservation with a specialization in archaeology, applied/public history, or other closely related field.
  • Knowledge and work experience of ESRI ArcMap GIS and Oracle relational databases preferred. Candidates should have experience with data coding/cataloging and with digitizing feature classes in a ArcGIS, or a similar program.
  • Candidates should possess strong communication skills and organizational ability.
  • Candidates should have skills with office productivity software (Microsoft Word, Excel), document scanning, and using the internet.
  • Academic and experience based knowledge of Montana history and archaeology, including cultural resource site identification, evaluation and treatment preferred.
  • Familiarity with varied research sources available (maps, literature, site forms, archival materials, Internet) is desirable.
