Dovetail Cultural Resource Group (Dovetail) is currently accepting applications for a preservation technician in our Fredericksburg, Virginia office.  Preservation technicians are an integral part of our busy architectural history program, functioning as entry-level staff who aid architectural historians, historians, and managers on a variety of preservation projects. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about the Cultural Resource Management business and expand skillsets through hands-on activities. Work will include:


  • Reconnaissance and intensive architectural surveys
  • Archival and historical research
  • Preparation of historic contexts
  • Report production
  • State architectural resource packets
  • GIS and CAD map production



Applicant must be able to identify historic properties, render architectural photographs, and have a basic understanding of federal- and state-level preservation law. Proficiency in CAD and/or GIS is a notable plus. The Applicant must also be proficient in Word and Excel, and be physically able to conduct architectural surveys in a myriad of settings including rural areas. It should also be noted that the position will require some travel during the week, but per diem and lodging will be provided on projects more than approximately 60 miles from Fredericksburg. The position is 40 hours per week and will last a minimum of two years. Pay is $1215/hour based on experience, and work will begin immediately.



Applicant must have a minimum of: a) a Bachelors degree in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, History, or a related field and at least six months of hands-on experience dealing with recordation of cultural resources in a business or university setting; or, b) at least two years of hands-on experience recording above-ground resources in a professional position.
