HistoriCorps®, a 591(c)3 nonprofit organization, promotes hands-on public involvement in the restoration and preservation of historic places and structures on our public lands through the engagement of volunteers, students, veterans, youth training programs and organizations interested in historic preservation. HistoriCorps partners with federal, state and local land management agencies to provide educational and outdoor opportunities, fostering in our participants a lifelong commitment to the stewardship of our historic resources and public lands. From our Denver, CO headquarters, we coordinate and instruct projects on public lands throughout the United States.

The Volunteer and Communications Managers overarching objective is to recruit, register, manage, and cultivate on-going relationships with project participants (volunteers, veterans, students and youth) and community partners, and to expand HistoriCorps public and online presence through effective marketing, communications and public relations. This individual will set and guide the strategy for all external messaging while ensuring our recruitment and volunteer management needs are met in the field. This individual will engage with our many partners, network, and the general public on a regular basis to promote HistoriCorps mission and volunteer/educational opportunities. Duties include but are not limited to:

Volunteer Program Management:

Design and implement a volunteer/student recruitment plan, systematically researching and pursuing recruitment outlets;

Recruit volunteers for 20+ historic preservation projects each year;

Foster and develop relationships with organizations, groups, and schools, such as veteran service organizations, Passport In Time, Smoke Jumpers, or undergraduate and graduate programs in Historic Preservation, who can and are willing to steer students, veterans and volunteers to HistoriCorps and its field school-centered Historic Preservation program;

Coordinate HistoriCorps participation at recruitment fairs and special events; create project-specific promotional materials and information;

Collaborate with Educational Programs Manager to recruit students for Historic Building Technology Program;

Contact and engage community leaders and related organizations to generate awareness;

Develop and deliver appropriate messages and promotional materials to target audiences;

Market opportunities through event outreach, partnership development, and cold calling/emailing;

Act as point of contact for interested volunteers, veterans, students and youth;

Oversee all aspects of the volunteer program, including but not limited to: pre-and post-project communication; project registration and logistics; tracking of volunteer hours, feedback and other demographic information; resource development; and volunteer appreciation.

Hire, train and supervise student interns and office volunteers;

Train and support field staff to manage volunteers in the field;


Manage website content and design;

Research and purchase promotional merchandise (t-shirts, water bottles, stickers, and so on);

Manage photo library and online gallery;

Create, update and distribute print and digital resource materials, including flyers, graphics, slideshows, and table displays;

Manage HistoriCorps online presence, including Google Ad Words accounts and presence on various websites;
