Cultural Resouces Section-History Unit

Georgia DOT is responsible for reviewing GDOT projects and filing appropriate documentation to ensure that all projects comply with applicable federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations. The Cultural Resources Section's review of GDOT projects is generally conducted under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (if Federally funded or permitted) or the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (if State funded). ​

Description of Duties: Under close supervision, perform entry level work learning to conduct surveys and research on Federal-aid and State-aid transportation projects to identify and document historic resources which are eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, to compare alternates, to assess effects of the proposed transportation projects to those resources, to prepare documentation concerning such resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal environmental laws and regulations, and to complete mitigation of adversely affected resources. Serve as a liaison between the Georgia Department of Transportation and other State and Federal agencies and private parties concerned with historic resources of the state.


Completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Architectural History, Architecture or Historic Architecture, Historic preservation, or a closely related field in accordance with the Secretary of Interior Standards with requisite experience (i.e. experience in fieldwork (survey) and resource identification)

Possesses basic knowledge of the identification, evaluation, and management of historic resources

Demonstrated architectural field survey experience

Possesses familiarity with related legislation such as the National Historic Preservation Act (knowledge in this area is typically obtained through a bachelor's and/or master's degree in history, historical preservation, or a closely related field.)

Ability to comprehend laws, policies, rules and regulations related to historic preservation

Committed to providing quality customer service

Ability to perform basic mathematical computations

Ability to use correct grammar and spelling to communicate facts and messages in a clear and organized manner

Ability to adapt quickly to change including new policies/procedures

Ability to manage own time effectively

Ability to effectively apply new knowledge and skills in work performed

Ability to accurately recall instructional information

Displays a high level of commitment toward work and a high standard of ethical conduct


Completion of a Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Architecture, or Historic Architecture.

Demonstrated architectural field survey experience such as but not limited to large scale surveys of corridors, cities, or municipalities.

Demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying historic preservation and/or environmental laws such as the National Historic Preservation Act
