Preservation Action

Preservation Action is the only national grass-roots lobbying organization focused on Historic Preservation and Public Policy. Based in Washington DC, Preservation Action is a membership-based advocacy group that fosters cooperative efforts to support preservation legislation, funding, and activism with its members and partners across the United States.

PA is a lean, tightly-funded organization headquartered in the Historic Heurich Mansion in downtown Washington. Its Board of Directors and Executive Committee, along with its partner organization, the Preservation Action Foundation (PAF) are seeking a dynamic individual to assume leadership as the organizations President and Executive Director. Responsibilities will include:

Work closely with the Preservation Action Board to implement the strategic plan and shape the programs and activities of the organization

Coordinate with staff, volunteers, and partners on state and federal legislation affecting historic preservation

Complete and distribute the weekly Legislative Update email

Responsibility for administrative direction for the organization membership development and renewals, fund raising, and budget management

Leadership in scheduling Washington Advocacy Week in March in partnership with other organizations identifying key issues, organization and lobbying, awards presentations, and administrative activities

Provide direction for special programs such as the Advocacy Scholars, state-wide and local capacity building presentations, and other initiatives

Coordinate with NCSHPO, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the Preservation Caucus on current and future preservation issues

Participate in the 50th Anniversary of the 1966 Historic Preservation Act

Serve as the national spokesperson for PA in the historic preservation community

Provide administrative services and support to PAF as needed.

Required/Desired Experience

Knowledge of Capital Hill, the legislative process and cause-based advocacy

Understanding of historic preservation in the U.S. and its regulatory structures

Ability to take initiatives and work with partner organizations

Administrative and systems management for membership organizations

Strong communication skills

Flexibility and adaptability to address changing issues

Ability to multi-task

Sense of humor

Will consider part time or full time job structure, non-profit industry salary and benefits commensurate with experience
