The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership (JTHG) seeks a President and Chief Executive Officer (President/CEO). This is a highly responsible and visible leadership position based in historic Waterford, Virginia. The President/CEO reports to JTHG’s Board of Trustees, leads and manages JTHG’s staff of highly qualified professionals, and serves as the principal public face and advocate for historic preservation, heritage tourism, and environmental conservation in a multistate region that stretches 180 miles from the Gettysburg Battlefield to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Established in 2005, the JTHG Partnership partners with more than 350 organizations and includes every elected jurisdiction within the region. JTHG is dedicated to identifying 21st-century solutions that balance economic growth with the need to preserve the irreplaceable historic, natural and cultural resources of the region. Through these efforts, the JTHG Partners support their communities, honor the contributions of generations past and present, and inspire the future. Mission Statement: The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising national and international awareness of the unparalleled history in the 180-mile long and 75-mile wide region, from Gettysburg, through Harpers Ferry and Maryland, to Monticello in Albemarle County, VA. From its communities, farms, businesses and heritage sites, we have an opportunity to celebrate and preserve this vital fabric of America which stands today in the historic, scenic and natural beauty of this region. The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership is dedicated to encouraging both Americans and world visitors to appreciate, respect, and experience this cultural landscape that makes it uniquely American. We are committed to achieving this Mission by: • Building a strong network of local, regional and national partners to develop a common vision for the conservation and enhancement of the scenic, historic, recreational, cultural, and natural characteristics of the region. • Developing an education outreach program to reach every student and teacher within the region as well as across the nation. • Creating a heritage tourism program that will provide economic development opportunities, through regional branding and cooperative marketing, in communities throughout the corridor. • Working in partnership with local, state and national leaders and residents to create a National Scenic Byway and a National Heritage Area to sustain and strengthen our economy, heritage and quality of life in this region. • Creating open cooperation with property owners, heritage sites, citizens, businesses, real estate leaders and public officials to find that balance between growth and preservation that will help communities to prosper and citizens to travel safely while taking pride in our American Heritage.

In 2005 the Board of Trustees set out a very ambitious business plan.  JTHG has   since then met or exceeded each goal:

·      Create regional, national and international awareness of The Journey Through Hallowed Ground

·      Seek and secure Congressional designation of the region as a National Heritage Area

·      Seek and secure designation of the Rt. 15 Corridor from Gettysburg to Monticello as a National Scenic Byway

·      Create educational programs to civically engage students, teachers and visitors

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership has been able to achieve its goals because of the leadership of its Board of Trustees, its team of professionals, and the collaborative efforts of over 350 Partnering organizations. 

Building on this record of achievement and with a FY 2015 operating budget exceeding $1 million, the new President/CEO will have the opportunity to bring the Management Plan objectives to fruition and undertake the mission outlined in the Capital Campaign developed by the organization and the Board of Trustees. He or she must maintain active involvement with issues within The Journeys region and develop strong working relationships with municipal and non-profit partner organizations to identify and cooperate in promoting their common interests. The new President/CEO will oversee annual and major gift fundraising and keep the organization on a sustainable financial footing.


Qualifications: The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership seeks an entrepreneurial not-for-profit leader with a portfolio of demonstrable success and at least 7-10 years of management and supervisory experience. The ideal candidate will have an informed passion for historic preservation and environmental conservation advocacy. He or she must have expertise and experience in fundraising, including foundation and government grant writing, membership development, annual fundraising and major gift programs. Experience in working with a volunteer Board of Trustees, in strategic planning, and in building organizational capacity is essential. The successful candidate will have excellent written and spoken communication skills and the ability to recruit and inspire others. A baccalaureate degree is required and a graduate or professional degree in a relevant discipline is preferred.
