AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. is seeking an Architectural Historian/Historian for immediate, full time employment located at the White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. White Sands Missile Range is the largest military installation in the United State measuring 3,200 square miles and is located within the Tularosa Basin, between the San Andres and Sacramento mountain ranges. It is the birthplace of the American missile program and home to the V-2 rocket. Funding is immediately available for a minimum of one year of employment with the possibility of additional follow-on work.

Primary Responsibilities for this Position Include:

  • Assist federal cultural resource staff in carrying out Section 106 responsibilities relating to an expansive built environment;
  • Complete new and update existing historic documentation;
  • Conduct archival research resulting in historic context development;
  • Conduct architectural resources surveys and assist in making reocmmendations for determinations of eligibility of resources for the NRHP;
  • Field survey to include Cold War resources, mining and ranching resources;
  • Write short articles for submission to small newspaper;
  • Review work projects for determination of effect; and
  • Assist in development of multi-media documentation of historic properties.

Required Qualificiations for this Position Include:

  • Master's degree in History, Military History, American History, American Studies or a closely related field;
  • At least three years of related work experience;
  • Proficient knowledge of Section 106 regulations, polcies, and procedures;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to individuals and groups;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of architectural resources and apply technical and scientific principles to their management in a federal context;
  • Must be a United States citizen; and
  • Must be willing to relocate to Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Desirable Qualifications for this Position Include:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills;
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and other database software;
  • Work experience with a Department of Defense Agency (Army, Navy, or Air Force);
  • A background in Cold War era history, preferably with basic knowledge of missile defense; and
  • Knowledge of evaluating historic districts and landscapes.
