Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has an immediate opening for a mid-level Architectural Historian to join our expanding Historic Preservation Program. This is a regular, full-time position to work primarily in the California Central Coast region, but project assignments will involve travel to other areas. Starting wage depends on qualifications and experience. Job Description: The available position is for a mid-level professional architectural historian. The successful candidate will have both technical and project management responsibilities and will be required to:

  • Perform archival and historical research using primary and secondary resources;
  • Conduct oral interviews and report findings;
  • Develop historic contexts and write historic overviews;
  • Record, photo-document, and evaluate the significance and integrity of historical buildings, structures, and landscapes to current professional standards;
  • Write professional technical reports based on documentary evidence and field research;
  • Prepare HABS/HAER/HALS documentation;
  • Attend local historic preservation commission meetings in support of client projects;
  • Prepare proposals and budgets, scope projects, assist with business development, and interface with clients, agencies and the public on behalf of Æ.

Education/Experience: M.A. degree in history, public history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related discipline required. The successful candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interiors Professional Qualification Standards for an Architectural Historian and Historian. This position requires a minimum of 6 years of professional experience as an architectural historian. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience managing historic built environment projects and preparing proposals. A depth of California and CEQA experience including the ability to contribute to programmatic and project level environmental impact reports (EIR) would be a plus.

Required Skills: The applicant must have 6 years of demonstrated experience conducting and directing historic built environment surveys and recording and evaluating historic built environment resources according to NRHP and CRHR criteria. The position requires a solid working knowledge of state and federal regulatory compliance, expertise in archival research, and strong written and oral communication skills.  The successful candidate must demonstrate a positive work ethic, reliability, ability to manage multiple projects, and commitment to serving as an integral team member.
