The City of Detroit Legislative Policy Division is seeking a Research Assistant to serve the Historic Designation Advisory Board (HDAB). The board's main function is to advise City Council on matters relating to historic preservation, most particularly in proposals for the designation of City of Detroit historic districts.



The Research Assistant will, under direction of HDAB staff, assist the HDAB with a variety of tasks, including:



  • study and planning of proposed local historic districts and preparation of preliminary and final reports

  • preparation and review of National Register of Historic Places registration forms

  • ongoing, citywide survey of historic resources




The applicant must, at a minimum:



  • meet or exceed National Park Service professional qualifications standards (formerly published as 36 CFR Part 61) for history or architectural history

  • not be in default to the city upon any debt, contract, surety, or other obligation, including income taxes and property taxes



Desired qualifications are as follows:




  • demonstrated ability to conduct original research using primary sources and oral history

  • excellent writing and editing skills

  • prior experience applying the National Register of Historic Places evaluation criteria to proposed local historic districts or National Register nominations

  • familiarity with the National Historic Preservation Act, especially Section 106

  • experience applying the National Register evaluation criteria to resources associated with underrepresented communities and urban environments

  • familiarity with the history, culture, and geography of Detroit



Experience meeting the National Register Photo Policy standards and experience with Geographic Information Systems software are helpful, but not necessary.



This will be a part-time position, not to exceed 30 hours per week. Compensation will be in the range of $20.00$25.00 per hour, depending on qualifications. The anticipated start date will be in mid-September, 2015. This is a contractual position, subject to annual review.
