Architectural Historian
Professional Opportunity
Edwards Airforce Base, CA

Our Architectural Historians:

  • Conduct Section 106 review of USAF undertakings.
  • Provide Section 110 support for building evaluations.
  • Evaluate buildings for National Register eligibility and prepare nomination packages for eligible buildings.
  • Maintain an historic buildings database and ensure concordance with the installation real property inventory.
  • Perform fundamental condition assessments of eligible buildings with the purpose of developing preservation strategies for those most threatened.
  • Review construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects for compliance with applicable federal, Department of Defense, and Air Force historic preservation regulations and guidance.
  • Provide analysis and cultural resources content for environmental assessments.
  • Support the BHPO during consultation and development of agreements with the SHPO, as required for mitigation of adverse effects to historic properties.
  • Review and provide updated content for integrated cultural resources management plans, general installation plans, area development plans, and other documents as needed.

Position requires a current Secret Security Clearance (or ability to obtain). To obtain, must be a U.S. citizen. This is a project hire position. Anticipated completion date is September 2016.

Basic Qualifications

  • Masters Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, or a related field.
  • One year of professional experience in historic preservation or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be in good health, able to lift and carry 30 lbs, able to climb ladders and stairs, able to work in extreme weather conditions, be comfortable maneuvering in narrow passages, and familiar with common PPE requirements for construction sites.
  • Must have experience using a digital single lens reflex camera.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain Secret clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be motivated, and can work safely with minimum supervision or leading a small team.
  • Experience with cultural resources on federal lands and demonstrated knowledge of cultural resource management and historic preservation laws and policies.
  • Field experience using established methods and techniques of applied architectural research of historic buildings and structures, including building condition assessments, restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptive re-use.
  • Documentation and research experience, including Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documentation, historic structure reports, and National Register eligibility evaluations and nominations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Cold War era military history, architectural/engineering design, and construction materials.
  • Experience with historic preservation on a military installation, balancing mission needs with legal compliance and stewardship of historic properties.
  • Experience working with multiple parties that have conflicting interests and come from varying disciplines.
