Farm to School Program

Urban Roots’ Farm to School education program seeks to use gardens as outdoor classrooms to improve students’ interest in school and healthy foods. AmeriCorps members in the Farm to School program will use hands-on, standards-based STEM and nutrition education to improve academic engagement, install and maintain school gardens, and provide workshops and outreach to promote sustainable agriculture and environmentally-conscious techniques in Washoe County schools and rural northern Nevada lands.

(1) The Secondary Schools Outreach Educator will conduct outreach activities centered on middle and high schools in Washoe County and northern Nevada. This Educator will develop curriculum suitable for this age group and meet with teachers and community members involved in these schools to assess needs and potential partnerships. This person will contact middle and high school teachers, attend parent/teacher organization meetings, conduct tabling activities at the appropriate events, research and write lessons designed to both appeal to this older student group and meet appropriate state standards.  This service is designed to increase academic engagement and preference for fruits and vegetables in students that participate in the programming.

(1) The Specialty Crop Educator will focus on designing and implementing lessons related to specialty crop production in northern Nevada. These lessons will be based on environmentally-sustainable techniques that can be used to grow a variety of grows in this region. Lessons will be designed for all ages from elementary school to adult workshops.

(1)  The School Garden Educator will recruit and train community members to design, install, and maintain school or community gardens. Trainings will focus on using sustainable agriculture practices in order increase environmental stewardship knowledge or will be designed to increase the sense of food security in participants. The Garden Educator will also design lessons for school-aged students that use school gardens as an outdoor classroom and increase academic engagement and preference for fruits and vegetables.
