The Bureau of Planning and Sustainability is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing complex programs and projects related to sustainability, urban design, land use, historic preservation and long range planning. This recruitment will close when we have received 150 complete applications or on the posted closing date of August 24, 2015, whichever comes first.

 To Qualify:
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position: 
  1. Knowledge of and experience applying the theory, principles, practices, policies, standards and regulations of urban design review and planning.
  2. Knowledge of and experience with architectural design, styles, history, and historic preservation. 
  3. Ability and experience performing difficult and complex technical research and analysis of urban design and land use planning issues or problems, evaluating alternatives and recommending or adopting effective courses of action.
  4. Ability and experience understanding, interpreting, explaining and applying all applicable regulations, policies, procedures, and standards to complex, specialized, and diverse urban design and land use planning processes. 
 The Recruitment Process:

Only candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list. You have 14 days from the notice of the examination results to let us know if you disagree with your results. Please read the City of Portland Administrative Rule 3.01 for complete information. Additional evaluation may be required prior to establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.
Senior City Planners (Urban Design Specialty) in the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability work in one of two capacities: 
  1. Senior City Planners (Urban Design Specialty) provide urban design expertise to project teams within the Bureau and to other City bureaus. Responsibilities include: drafting new or revised design guidelines, interfacing with the Design Commission, and producing visual materials including diagrams, maps, illustrations, renderings, documents and other products expressing urban design concepts and issues at several scales street level, neighborhood, district, and citywide. Incumbents utilize primarily the Adobe Creative Suite software package (including Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.), GoogleEarth, Sketchup, and hand drawing skills to produce visual materials.
  2. Senior City Planners (Urban Design Specialty) manage the Bureaus Historic Resources Program and ensure the Citys status as a Certified Local Government is maintained. Responsibilities include updating the Citys Historic Resource Inventory, maintaining the Citys Historic Resources database, grant writing, drafting new or revised historic guidelines, liaising with stakeholders, and interfacing with the Historic Landmarks Commission.
