Established in 1968 and renamed in 1975, Historic Nashville, Inc. (HNI) is a nonprofit 501(c)3 membership organization with the mission to promote and preserve the historic places that make Nashville unique. Over the years, HNI has successfully advocated for the preservation of such historic places the Ryman Auditorium, Union Station, Hermitage Hotel, 2nd Avenue & Lower Broadway and Shelby Street Bridge, as well as neighborhood historic districts throughout the city. In 1982, HNI established the state’s first Preservation Easement program and currently owns easements on 16 historic landmarks with a market value of over $50 million. HNI hosts an annual membership meeting, publishes an Annual Report, maintains a website, hosts educational programs such as Behind-the-Scenes tours, an annual fundraiser called the Brick & Mortar Bash and the annual Nashville Nine list of the city’s most endangered historic places.

Historic Nashville Inc. (HNI) is seeking an intern to assist with the writing, content, and graphics that comprise our monthly digital newsletter. The Newsletter Editor Intern will create and publish content that is relevant to our membership base and supporters. As an intern you will work as a member of our Marketing Committee team. The position is non-paid, but the intern manager is willing to collaborate to provide course credit, if applicable.

 

Duties:

Plan, prepare and distribute HNIs e-newsletter on a monthly basis

Write articles as assigned by committee members as well as stories based upon your own research

Collaborate with Marketing Committee members on new ideas, directions, and tools for marketing and communications

Collaborate with other HNI committees to provide up-to-date content for the e-news. 

Increase awareness of local historic preservation

Research local historic-related events and marketing strategies

Identify strategies to reach audience and build subscription list

Send out periodic email blasts related to upcoming events, breaking news, etc.

Manage email subscription list

 

Qualifications:

 

Excellent written and verbal communication, strong editing skills

Working knowledge of AP or Turabian Style Manuals

Curiosity about Nashville, its history, and the places that make us unique

A knack for writing headlines and cut lines

Strong organizational skills

A sharp eye for detail

Ability to deal with uncertainty 

Knowledge and personal access to a variety of computer programs, e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat. 

Ability to self-manage and meet monthly deadlines.

Responsible, hard-working, ethical and committed to the mission of HNI

Time Commitment: Minimum of 15-hours per week; minimum 6-month commitment

 

Compensation: This is an unpaid position. Position offers an excellent opportunity to work on substantive projects, gain experience in this field and can result in a great reference. College credit for undergraduates may be available.
