Job Description:

The Indiana Library and Historical Board, a five-member governing body appointed by the Governor of Indiana, is seeking a Director for the Indiana Historical Bureau. The incumbent must possess energy, enthusiasm, and strong leadership qualities necessary to lead a small historical research agency and continue its role as an active leader in the statewide history community. The Director oversees the agencys programmatic, financial, and administrative activities, including working with a variety of cultural, historical, and educational organizations statewide.


The responsibilities of the Director include:

  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the Indiana Historical Bureau with the Governors Office, Indiana General Assembly, media, and the general publicenhancing knowledge and recognition of the Historical Bureau and its work to present the states history to Indianas citizens, visitors to Indiana, and the web audience that spans the globe.
  • Provide visionary, innovative, and collaborative leadership in advancing the work of the Historical Bureau.
  • Maintain and strengthen the Historical Bureaus strong collaborative activities with its sister agency, the Indiana State Library.
  • Maintain and strengthen the Historical Bureaus extended partnerships with many other state and private entities that benefit the broad historical community.
  • Oversee the capable staff in moving forward with the mandated Indiana State Historical Marker Program and other programs and projects of the Historical Bureau, including a Book Shop operation.
  • Oversee the state financial and personnel operations of the Historical Bureau.
  • Continue to leverage historical anniversaries (e.g., Indiana Bicentennial, World War I, Civil War) to increase public interest in historical information and research.
  • Maintain the highest research standards in the operation of the Indiana State Historical Marker Program and other research projects.
  • Participate actively in other history-related forums to increase the visibility of the Historical Bureau and public history in Indiana.
  • Work with staff and other organizations to broaden the dissemination of historical research and information to interested publics through both traditional and social media.
  • Develop and implement realistic strategies to mobilize increased resources for the work of the Bureau.

Hire Salary:

Preferred Experience:

Masters degree in History/Public History preferred with at least 8 years of position-related professional experience

  • Demonstrated leadership working in history, public history, or related fields
  • Record of successful experience in policy administration, budgeting, and planning for a governmental entity preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to direct an organization, evaluate program performance, and implement effective solutions to ensure ongoing program refinement and enhancement
  • Demonstrated ability to forge effective coalitions and engage outside groups and decision makers to achieve organizational goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with legislative, governmental, educational, and cultural organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to speak persuasively before groups and provide information and testimony to elected and appointed officials
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectivelyorally and in writing
  • Demonstrated appreciation of Indiana history and working knowledge of historical research practices and standards
