Historic Ithaca, Inc.

Historic Ithaca, Inc. (HI), located in Tompkins County, New York, is a nonprofit preservation organization founded in 1966 during the height of local urban renewal demolitions. Notable successes have included saving and restoring the landmark Clinton House (1972); advocating for the adoption of the Ithaca Landmarks Preservation Ordinance (1971); and purchasing, restoring and operating the State Theater, the city's last remaining cinema and vaudeville palace (1997-2008). A 10-member Board of Directors guides the organization, comprised of 6 employees and several volunteers. HI offers an active array of programs, including professional preservation services, educational programs (workshops, lectures), advocacy, a library and resource center, and annual preservation awards. Historic Ithaca's headquarters and library are located in a former 1890s warehouse in Ithaca's Southside neighborhood. This building also houses Significant Elements, HI's architectural salvage store, which has offered recycled building parts for sale to the public since 1991. A job training program for young people operates out of Significant Elements, teaching retail and traditional building skills. Located in central New York State, Tompkins County is a singular place of great natural beauty and historic significance, with an exciting array of cultural assets. Home to Cornell University, Ithaca College, and Tompkins Cortland Community College, Ithaca and the surrounding towns are currently attracting a tremendous degree of investment and development. With the lowest unemployment rate in the state, Tompkins County attracts job-seekers from a wide spectrum, creating unique challenges and opportunities for the preservation community.

Historic Ithaca, Inc. is seeking an executive director: a creative leader who is collaborative, experienced, and able to view challenges as opportunities.


The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in historic preservation in a nonprofit setting; committed to our core values of advocacy, education, and action; and prepared to implement HIs recently adopted 5-year Strategic Plan. The organizations 50th anniversary in 2016 will feature a year-long schedule of celebrations and events. The Executive Director will showcase the organization through this milestone and build on its goodwill and momentum.  


Responsibilities include:

Working effectively with the Board of Directors; 

Preparing and monitoring the annual budget and monthly financial statements; 

Leading a dedicated, professional team of staff and volunteers; 

Serving as an articulate and effective spokesperson for the organization and preservation; 

Maintaining and enhancing positive relationships with local, state, and federal decision-makers; 

Developing, implementing, and monitoring a comprehensive fundraising plan for fiscal stability. 


Significant experience in historic preservation or closely related fields required. Nonprofit leadership and management experience highly desired. Masters degree preferred. Knowledge of New York State a plus.
