Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation

The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation was founded in 1980 to preserve the architectural heritage and cultural history of Greenwich Village, the East Village, and NoHo. GVSHP is a leader in protecting the sense of place and human scale that define the Village’s unique community. Our programs include: Educational outreach in the form of public lectures, tours, exhibitions, and publications; A school program that teaches children about Greenwich Village history and architecture; preservation leadership on such issues as preservation of the South Village; preservation projects that promote an understanding of the Village’s historic importance, such as the Greenwich Village Preservation Archive and Oral History Project; consultation services on a wide variety of preservation issues, with GVSHP serving the community as historian, educator, archival resource, and technical consultant.

GVSHP seeks a highly-organized, detail-oriented, self-starter to coordinate diverse preservation, education, outreach, research, and advocacy projects.


Duties include:


·         Special research and writing projects on preservation and development issues

·         Event and program planning

·         Producing special reports and studies regarding public policy issues and analysis, particularly around affordable housing development and preservation

·         Social and conventional media outreach regarding organizations activities and accomplishments

·         Coordinating East Village preservation efforts, such as:

o    Outreach to community groups and leaders, government officials, preservation organizations and other interest groups regarding East Village preservation and education efforts

o    Formulating and executing events to engage the public in East Village preservation efforts

o    Helping to coordinate on-line, web-based, and social media outreach to assist with East Village preservation effort

o    Tracking status and condition of buildings in area


Applicant should have at least a BA, experience with research and writing around public policy issues in New York City, community outreach around preservation and/or planning issues (preferably in New York City), experience with designing and executing events and web-based educational materials, and a strong interest in the educational, research, programming, preservation, and advocacy work of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.  Strong writing and computer skills are a must.  Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat, Dreamweaver or other web design programs, experience with digital video and video editing, database applications, and document layout programs, and familiarity with GIS, Wordpress, and Sage, are especially helpful.  Familiarity with the East Village a plus.  Strong organizational skills and a proven track record of managing and completing projects in a fast-paced work environment are a must.  Ability to juggle multiple tasks and maintain flexibility is key.  40+ hrs./week, with occasional weekend and evening work.

Compensation package for permanent position includes full medical benefits, vacation, etc.
