CMEC provides services critical to environmental and cultural resources clearance within regulatory frameworks such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the Department of Transportation Act (DOT Act), Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, and state antiquities codes. CMEC produces Categorical Exclusions (CEs), Environmental Assessments (EAs), Environmental Impact Statements (EISs), historic structures reports, archaeological reports, and other compliance/due-diligence documents.

Job Description:

The primary function of the temporary Architectural Historian/Cultural Resources Specialist position is to support the CMEC Cultural Resources Program as needed with fieldwork and subsequent report preparation for an upcoming large, municipal historic resources survey, as well as other projects, as needed. Duties may include conducting archival research; recording historic resources in the field at the direction of senior staff; supporting client, resource agency, and landowner/land agent coordination; supporting the preparation of documents such as background studies, agency coordination letters, National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 consultation, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) sections, and technical reports; and other tasks assigned by archeological and historic resources Principal Investigators, CMEC Principals, and environmental Project Managers for projects in Texas, Oklahoma, and surrounding states.  This position may require the ability to work in difficult conditions (e.g., remote locations, summer heat).


Compensation will be on an hourly basis.  The position is anticipated to be a half-time position. There is potential for the position to transition to full time as workload allows. 




The successful applicant will possess, at a minimum, a bachelors degree in history, historic preservation, or a closely related field.  Required: based in Austin, Texas or general surrounding area; strong writing and research skills; photography skills; valid drivers license; an overall dedication to excellence; a strong work ethic; and a demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively. Preferred (please note any expertise with the following): Knowledge of Texas history and architecture; working knowledge of preservation laws and processes; solid field skills including the ability to work in difficult conditions; knowledge of how to operate 35mm digital SLR camera; survey and photo-documentation experience; familiarity with NHPA/NEPA compliance; previous experience conducting Section 106 report documentation and survey work for DOTs, writing National Register nominations and Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record (HABS/HAER) documentation; experience with historic resource database management; TxDOT precertifications for 2.7.1, 2.8.1 and 2.11.1 or eligibility to obtain them; experience with large projects (300+ resources).
