A one year advanced externship is now available for recent graduates in historic preservation (MS, MA, PhD or PhD candidate) to assist in an assessment of technical historic preservation training needs within the National Park Service. This will be accomplished through a partnership between the Western Center for Historic Preservation (WCHP) and the Architectural Conservation Laboratory/School of Design (ACL) at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) in association with the Vanishing Treasures (VT) Program and through the CESU partnership.

The project will include the following components:

a) Completion of an assessment of the range of resources in the VT geographic area, and preservation needs associated with those resources through a review of data in existing databases, information collected through park surveys, and limited site visits;

b) Identification of the audience or range of audiences for the training program;

c) Development of training curriculum that details content and formats that are feasible;

d) Determination of strategic locations for training based on geography, availability of technical support, resource types, housing availability, need;

e) Coordination of a meeting in FY 2016 to discuss the recommended training curriculum, and other project foci.

f) Preparation of a final report with recommendations for future phases.

Program activities will be accomplished under the direction of Lauren Meyer, Program Manager for the VT Program and Katherine Wonson, Director of the Western Center for Historic Preservation (both NPS), and Frank Matero, Professor of Architecture/Director of Architectural Conservation Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania. Additional assistance will be provided by VT Program staff.

Extern will be located in Moose, WY in Grand Teton National Park at the Western Center for Historic Preservation. Housing is not provided.
