The Planning & Zoning Department provides guidance for the future development of the City of Miami by preparing neighborhood plans; administering, interpreting, and preparing amendments to the Zoning Ordinance and the Miami Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan; preparing recommendations to and administering the Zoning Board, Planning Advisory Board, Historic and Environmental Preservation Board, and other hearing boards; and collecting and analyzing demographic, physical, social, and economic data on the City of Miami. The historic preservation program promotes the identification, evaluation, rehabilitation, adaptive use, and restoration of the City's historic, architectural, and archeological heritage. The preservation program is regulated in Chapter 23 of the City Code.

This is responsible professional and technical work involving moderately difficult duties in historic preservation. The positions incumbent will exercise considerable independent judgment and discretion and will perform the duties under general supervision and direction. This is a temporary position in the Planning and Zoning Department reporting to the Preservation Officer or his/her designee.


The position incumbent applies professional historic preservation principles, practices and techniques to a wide variety of routine and moderately advanced historic preservation projects. The duties of the position include, but are not limited to: reviewing, analyzing, conducting site visits, reporting findings and making recommendations on applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for proposed work affecting historic properties; conducting historic surveys, researching and preparing designation reports for proposed historic sites and historic districts; providing technical assistance to property owners and neighborhood groups and responding to inquiries regarding historic preservation; assisting in the administration of the Historic and Environmental Preservation Board; and performing other duties as may be required.


Minimum Requirements:
A Masters degree from an accredited college or university in Historic Preservation, Architecture, Architectural History, American Studies, or a related field; and considerable (2 4 years) experience working in historic preservation, design review and/or historical research. A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized upon application, however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented to the Department of Employee Relations.
