Associates Degree in Landscape Maintenance, Horticulture, or closely related field with a minimum two years experience in landscape and grounds maintenance is required, with landscape management experience performed in a historic and/or public garden setting preferred. Must either possess or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire a FL Drivers license, and obtaining a CDL / Class B license may be required. Ability to obtain Florida Public Applicators pesticide license within 6 months of hire is required. Employee will be able to carry up to 40 lbs. and work outside in varying climatic conditions that include excessive heat and humidity; and must be able to stand for long periods of time and safely traverse uneven surfaces. The ability to work with typical landscape maintenance equipment (small tractor, mowers, tillers, string-trimmers, pruning/cutting equipment, hand tools) is essential. Daily duties will require visitor interaction on a regular basis, and a standard code of conduct will be required. The successful candidate should have the ability to communicate clearly and directly, orally and in writing, to a widely varied group of staff, volunteers, and visitors. The ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends as required and requested is highly preferred. The successful applicant must have the ability to procure a FL drivers license within 90 days, and FL Public Applicators license within 6 months of hire.
The position of Horticulturist will enable the furthering of Vizcayas horticultural mission through effective horticultural display and landscape management. The Horticulturist will be a critical, hands-on component of the Horticulture team, a non-supervisory position reporting to the Director of Horticulture, and will also work closely with the Historic Landscape Manager and Curator of Orchids. By utilizing their hands - on ornamental horticulture experience, the Horticulturist will ensure the effective management of ongoing specialized horticultural display related tasks consisting of containerized horticultural displays and display of living collections, indoor landscapes, Vizcayas IPM program, and nursery management. The successful applicant should be computer literate and have the ability to quickly learn BGBase software. The Horticulturist will ensure all landscapes and natural areas are maintained to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens standards of display and horticultural excellence.
The Horticulturist requires technical knowledge in garden and grounds maintenance practices, including knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) guidelines. Employee will be required to participate in hands-on landscape activities in addition to supervision of future subordinate staff and pesticide applicators, ensuring the safe and effective application of insecticides and pesticides in accordance with IPM best practices. This position will require collaboration with occasional contracted crews of various landscape disciplines over a wide and varied area. State of Florida Public Applicators license is required for this position in addition to the ability to recognize pests and diseases of ornamental plants and turf. Knowledge of or the ability to quickly learn tropical and subtropical landscape plants and landscape best management practices is desired. Candidates must possess a working knowledge of plant identification methods. Knowledge of gasoline powered landscape equipment is a plus. Demonstrated nursery management experience is desired but not required.
