Historic New England seeks an intern to work with the Property Care project management staff during the summer of 2016 on the Eustis Estate in Milton, Mass. Property Care is the team responsible for the preservation and maintenance of 36 historic house museums and their landscapes located in five New England states. The Historic New England property collection spans four centuries and is comprised of 15 National Historic Landmark sites and 28 National Register sites. Historic New England has been a leader in establishing preservation philosophy, standards and methods, and continues to provide models of historic preservation for preservation professionals, organizations and the public.
The Preservation Project Management Intern will assist staff in documenting ongoing work at the Eustis Estate in Milton, Mass. The internship time commitment is a minimum of 14 hours per week however internships are flexible and tasks can be expanded based on additional commitments of time.
Interns will begin the summer with instruction on Historic New Englands preservation philosophy and white papers, as well as our approach to project development and documentation. Interns will work out of the Eustis Estate, attend construction meetings and document activities for the project managers review. An expected emphasis is construction photography with the intern taking project photography with a digital SLR camera and processing photography from a series of time-lapse cameras set up to document certain aspects of the project. Pending FAA approval, the intern may be instructed in the operation of a quadcopter drone for the purpose of documenting the project from the above. The intern may also support the creation of a white paper on photo-documentation of projects or other similar projects.
Applicants working toward a degree in historic preservation, architecture, engineering, conservation or other related field with an interest in historic preservation are encouraged to apply.
The intern will report to the Eustis Estate in Milton, Mass. Temporary workspaces will be arranged however conditions within a construction project may be rustic. Periodic trips to Historic New Englands Lyman Estate, located in Waltham, Mass, may be necessary for group lectures and programming. The internships are unpaid.
