While the posting is for a general planner position, it is expected that this planner will fully manage the Citys Historic Preservation program, including serving as staff liaison to the Historic District Council. Applicants should demonstrate an educational background in historic preservation and/or experience in managing a local government historic preservation program. The Citys historic preservation activities date to the 1970s and involve regulatory review of design projects, as well as education and outreach. Fernandina Beach is a Certified Local Government, a Preserve America community, and a newly designated Florida Main Street community. The City has two National Register and local historic districts, a Community Redevelopment Area, several individually-designated local historic district sites, and a historic municipal cemetery. The preservation planner is expected to maintain productive working relationships with community partners such as the Fernandina Beach Main Street program, Amelia Island Museum of History, the Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach Restoration Foundation, the Historic Fernandina Business Association, the Amelia Island Tourist Development Council, and Amelia Island-Fernandina Beach-Yulee Chamber of Commerce. It is important that the historic preservation planner recognize the unique qualities of our historic town and understand the balance and interconnectivity between historic preservation and an active, thriving business and tourist community.

The City of Fernandina Beach, located on beautiful Amelia Island, currently has an opening for a Planner I/Planner II in the Community Development department. 

Salary $38,894 - $64,323 DOQ

 

Qualifications

Bachelors Degree in Planning or related field and two years related work experience in municipal planning and zoning required.    Masters Degree in urban or regional planning (or closely related field) preferred.  American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) preferred.  Valid Florida drivers license required.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) preferred.  Knowledge of the comprehensive planning process and the comprehensive plan, including its implemental mechanisms.  Thorough understanding of the principles, practices and methods of City planning and regulatory land use requirements and techniques.  An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience may be substituted to meet the minimum requirements. 

 

General Description

Responsible professional work assisting in the administration of the Citys Land Development Code and the Comprehensive Plan.  Assists the Community Development Director with the coordination of personnel for planning and implementing the overall development review process for residential, commercial and industrial development projects citywide.  Work involves review of potential development projects, and issue resolution associated with the Citys overall planning policies and community development direction.  Work involves considerable public contact, often of a sensitive nature and requires the exercise of patience, sound judgment, tact and diplomacy.  Responsible for attending and presenting Planning Division staff reports to the various Boards and Commissions.
