SA is seeking a Preservation Specialist to provide a wide range of historic preservation services on building rehabilitation projects: conducting historical research, preparing nominations for designation, overseeing applications for federal and state historic tax credits, guiding design for compliance with the Secretary of the Interiors Standards, and monitoring sensitive preservation issues during construction. In addition to providing general preservation support as needed, the Preservation Specialist will be expected to manage select rehabilitation projects from initial evaluation through completion and occupancy, including regular interaction with building owners, architects (within and outside SA), engineers, contractors, and representatives of local, state and federal regulatory agencies. The position offers a unique mix of office and field work, and an opportunity to learn from and contribute to broader preservation planning efforts as well as the aesthetic and technical challenges of repairs and improvements to historic buildings.


Typical duties and responsibilities:

  • Research and write nominations of individual properties and historic districts to the National Register of Historic Places
  • Prepare Parts 1, 2 and 3 of the federal Historic Preservation Certification Application, including associated photographic and historical documentation
  • Prepare state historic tax credit applications
  • Advise architects, contractors and clients on options and alternatives for achieving desired project goals and scopes of work while meeting the Secretary of the Interiors Standards
  • Facilitate project teams interactions with the State Historic Preservation Office, National Park Service and other applicable review agencies on proposed scopes of work and sensitive preservation issues
  • Monitor construction activities to insure appropriate execution and documentation of preservation-related scopes of work
  • Document and respond to proposed changes to preservation-related scopes of work that arise during construction
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and achieve timely completion of preservation tasks


Desired qualifications:


  • Masters degree in historic preservation or related field
  • Experience conducting historical research on buildings and neighborhoods
  • Familiarity with historic tax credit review processes and the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation
  • Ability to read architectural drawings and communicate proposed work verbally and in writing
  • Comfort communicating with owners, architects, engineers, and contractors regarding building repairs and improvements
  • Willingness to visit building sites in a variety of conditions, before and during construction
  • Strong writing skills
  • Effective verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit or other architectural software helpful
  • Ability to travel
