Preservation Planner
Professional Opportunity
Watertown, MA

VHBs Environmental Resources Group is seeking a full-time preservation planner to work in our Watertown, MA office with our expanding cultural resources group. Key responsibilities include the preparation of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation, planning, and land development projects and state and federal historic tax credit projects.

Conduct and manage cultural resource identification and evaluation surveys for public and private sector clients.
Task manage and provide technical fulfillment on cultural resource components of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation and land development projects. Likely tasks will include identification and evaluation of historic properties, assessment of project-related impacts, and technical writing.
Coordinate Section 106 and other applicable federal, state, and local historic preservation reviews for transportation and land development projects, including identification and evaluation of historic properties; assessment of project-related impacts; and preparation of process documentation. Assist Practice Area Leader in consultation and negotiation with SHPOs, government officials, and consulting parties.
Prepare historic tax credit applications for submittal to state and federal review agencies.
Support other VHB departments and regional offices with historic preservation planning, site history research, and compliance services.
Assist Director of Cultural Resources in scoping, managing, and tracking projects and proposals and in marketing group services within and outside VHB.

A BA/BS degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation Planning, or closely-related discipline (MA/MS is preferred)
Five to seven years of professional experience
Must meet the Secretary of the Interiors professional qualifications
Excellent research, writing, editing, and photographic abilities
Experience with building research, and knowledge of architectural styles, forms, and periods of development
Operational knowledge of the history and architectural history of New England
An understanding of, and experience with, application of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
Fluency in reading architectural drawings and the ability to use computer hardware, software, and other related information technologies
Experience with federal and state cultural resource management with a working command of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation statutes and regulations, including Section 106 and National Register criteria is required
Experience with Chapter 254, MEPA, and NEPA are a plus

The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have a professional demeanor, strong organizational skills, and possess the ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and multitask in a fast-paced environment. The candidate should be able to work in a team environment with a variety of project members and manage tasks as delegated by project lead. The candidate must possess strong communication skills including writing skills and the ability to work closely with clients.
