Uniquely qualified in the field, IS Architecture has garnered more than 40 awards in Historic Preservation, including a Distinguished Practice Award from the American Institute of Architects California Council (AIACC) in 2014—the first time this award was ever granted specifically for preservation. Together Ione R. Stiegler, FAIA, and her studio have rehabilitated or restored more than 75 institutional historic structures, 18 adobe buildings, and more than 50 historic homes. We’ve provided professional preservation reports and assessments for scores of other projects. Ms. Stiegler is also one of the nation’s leading experts in preserving historic adobe. The firm specializes in applying the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Resources and has completed projects implementing all four approved treatments, Restoration, Preservation, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction. All professional staff members exceed the requirements of 36 CFR 61, Professional Qualification Standards, in Architectural History, Architecture, and Historic Architecture.

IS Architecture is an award-winning architecture firm that specializes in Custom Residential and Historic Preservation.  We are a small office of 9 seeking a highly motivated Architectural Historian to join our team. 

 Duties

  • Write historic preservation reports (including HABS, Historic Structure Reports, nomination reports, historic preservation treatment plans, etc.)
  • Conduct historical research
  • Field survey of built resources

 Requirements

  • Bachelor of Arts in History, Architectural History, or Historic Preservation
  • Outstanding historical research, analytical, and technical writing skills
  • Demonstrated comprehension and experience applying the Secretary of the Interiors Standards
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

 Preference will be given to applicants with the following knowledge of OR experience with:

  • CEQA
  • Caltrans built environment documentation
  • Section 106 
  • Cultural resource guidelines for municipalities
