Oneida Community Mansion House

The Oneida Community Mansion House is a 19th century National Historic Landmark built by and for the utopian socialist Oneida Community in central New York State. OCMH comprises four major buildings and 93,000 square feet of interior space sited on 200 acres of landscaped grounds. The Mansion House includes exhibits, period rooms, a library, and continues to provide residential housing to OC descendants and others in 30 apartments. OCMH conducts programming and sponsors research on 19th and early 20th century society and its themes, such as communitarianism, gender, class, childhood, agriculture, industrialization, artistic expression and craft work.

The Collections Intern will be excited by the history of this period, the social practices of 19th century utopians, and the intersections of agrarian with industrial society. They will work with curators to care for and catalogue collections of material culture, art and documents; to assist research projects; and to assist public programming use of collections, as needed.

Preference is given to learning internships, in collaboration with accredited colleges and universities, in which the Intern receives course credit, but other internship opportunities are also considered. The OCMH does not offer stipends at this time.

Desired qualifications 

Undergraduate study of museology, history, anthropology, or cognate discipline. 

Basic proficiency in office software (e.g. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

A professional work ethic.

Punctuality and reliability.

Commitment of 15-20 hours per week.

Must be able to climb stairs and to lift 40 lbs.

Academic credit is to be determined by student's university.

A laptop is not required but is desirable.
