The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is responsible, in partnership with the U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service and local governments, in carrying out the mandates of the National Historic Preservation Act (P.L. 89-665, as amended) in Missouri. The SHPO works with citizens and groups throughout the state to identify, evaluate and protect Missouri's diverse range of historic, architectural and archaeological resources.

The Missouri State Historic Preservation Office is seeking a motivated individual to assist in the National Register and Architectural Survey section. This position involves the review and comment of incoming National Register nominations and architectural survey materials. The selected candidate will also assist in the identification and evaluation of historic properties and districts in the state.These evaluations are utilized in community planning activities, National Register nominations, federally funded or licensed undertakings affecting historic resources, and projects seeking federal or state rehabilitation tax credits. Please note this position primarily focuses on above-ground resources.

Specific Duties:

1.) National Register Program: Assist in the review of nominations for the National Register of Historic Places program. Coordinate and participate in staff National Register eligibility assessments. Prepare assessment correspondence in a timely, clear, understandable and helpful manner.†† Assist in the planning, arrangement and implementation of quarterly meetings of the Missouri Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.Enter National Register program information into GIS if needed.

2.) Survey Program: Assist in the coordination of Missouri's Survey program by working with surveyors and contractors in the identification and evaluation of historic properties in the state. Review and comment on incoming architectural surveys. Assist in the archiving and digitization of the architectural surveys. Enter Architectural Survey information into GIS if needed.

3.) Monitoring of Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grant projects: Assist in the monitoring of HPF grant projects including providing assistance in the development of grant proposals, review and scoring of grant applications, development of grant contract and milestones, and final review and approval of grant funded activities or products.

4.) Technical Assistance: Respond to requests for information and assistance on issues such as National Register eligibility and on general preservation services and programs. This may include the occasional site visit and writing a site visit report.

The successful candidate must have experience in architectural historic preservation. This may include conducting or reviewing architectural surveys, writing or reviewing National Register nominations, making determinations of eligibility, or have received similar training concerning the preservation of architectural resources as defined by the National Park Service.The candidate must have strong editing, writing, research, and communication skills. The candidate must be familiar with basic Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Access, and PowerPoint in addition to Adobe Acrobat. Knowledge of Missouri history and architectural history is preferred, as is familarity with GIS software.
