The Senior Field Officer/Attorney works to save historic places by raising funds and applying specialized areas of expertise for the protection of nationally significant historic places through our National Treasures Program.  The Senior Field Officer/Attorney spends 50% of their time on public lands work and 50% of their time identifying potential National Treasure projects and ensuring the success of selected projects as a project manager or project team member, many of which will have a public lands focus.

The Senior Field Officer/Attorney will also be responsible for applying the National Trusts intervention criteria to non-National Treasure projects to determine if it is appropriate for the organization to take action.


  • Public Lands   Work with the Director of Public Lands Policy and other senior staff to develop, coordinate, and implement the National Trusts legal, administrative and legislative agenda.  Gather and assess various perspectives from within and outside the National Trust, focusing on public land policies.
  • Represent the National Trust on a systematic basis with federal land management agencies, especially western regional and state offices of the National Park Service and BLM.  Collaborate with the Director of Public Lands Policy on outreach and cultivation of Congressional offices. Must be comfortable and effective working with senior leadership in all capacities and must demonstrate an ability to maintain and grow a network of contacts to support our public lands policy priorities. 
  • Work in close collaboration with the National Conservation Lands and BLM advocacy communities, including coordinated advocacy efforts, to ensure agency plans and policy initiatives identify and protect cultural resources.  Where appropriate collaborate with National Trust colleagues to bring administrative or judicial actions to ensure the proposed of signification cultural resources.  Identify BLM lands that merit additional administrative and statutory protection.  
  • Collaborate with National Trust staff and volunteers, and our partner networks to enhance and strengthen protection of tribally significant places and resources. 
  • Work with National Trust staff and volunteers, and our partner networks, to build and strengthen historic preservation policies through legal, administrative and legislative action.  A priority project will be to develop a network of engaged cultural resource advocates. 
  • In collaboration with the Public Lands and Public Affairs teams, develop content for the National Trust website that includes dynamic advocacy opportunities and other ways to engage the public and partner organizations to protect historic and cultural resources.
  • Develop and implement project plans for National Treasures  The Senior Field Officer/Attorney will be responsible for creating and implementing project plans with stated goals and objectives to ensure successful outcomes for National Treasure projects. This person will lead multiple project teams and will work collaboratively with National Trust staff, outside partners, National Trust Advisors and other interested parties to undertake these projects.
  • Integrate programs in the work of the National Trust The Senior Field Officer/Attorney will work collaboratively with cross-Trust project teams to ensure successful outcomes for National Treasures, and will contribute to work undertaken on strategic themes when appropriate. This integration will be reflected in strategic plans, the annual work plan, and performance metrics, and will be part of evaluation cycles. 
  • Fundraise for National Treasure projects The Senior Field Officer/Attorney will work collaboratively with Field Services and the Advancement Division to meet established fundraising goals for assigned National Treasure projects.
  • Office management The Senior Field Officer will have some administrative duties related to the operations of the office  and act a mentor and a role model to the staff in the office.
  • Other duties as assigned.
