The Park contains four museums, four historic homes, features an extensive costumed interpretive program, and preserves the site of a major Civil War battlefield. Principal Functions:

The Chief of Maintenance is responsible for the maintenance of all facilities and grounds. He/she possesses an outstanding knowledge of all aspects of the buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems Park-wide and demonstrates journeyman skills in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, mechanical, and HVAC skills as they pertain to Pamplin Historical Park facilities. The incumbent serves at the primary advisor to the Director of Operations on all matters pertaining to facilities and grounds maintenance. He/she supervises the Senior Maintenance Specialist, Maintenance Specialists, and approved hourly staff, volunteers, and interns, and may serve as Acting Director of Operations.


The Chief of Maintenance will:

Draft annual goals for the approval of the Director of Operations, and bear responsibility for achieving all assigned goals

Participate in the annual budget preparation process and the management of budgets as assigned

Assist in the recruitment of new employees, volunteers, and interns, and make sound, well-considered recommendations to the Director of Operations based on thorough reviews, interviews, and reference checks

Provide training, evaluation, and mentoring for assigned staff members, and prepare appraisals and other personnel actions in a manner consistent with Park-wide standards

Draft work schedules for the approval of the Director of Operations

Perform journeyman to advanced level work in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical work on a regular basis, and grounds, facilities, and janitorial work as needed

Serve as an effective member of the Senior Leadership Team, participating in staff meetings, and planning sessions

Develop sound recommendations for policy and procedures pertaining to Park operations

Properly manage assigned equipment and assigned work and storage spaces

Develop, supervise, and implement construction and rehabilitation projects

  • Serve effectively as the lead or backup point of contact for contractors performing maintenance, catering, and special event work at the Park as determined by the Director of Operations
  • Act effectively as the Parks representative with local and state building officials, and as a contact point with all utilities companies on issues involving service requirements and repairs
  • Develop, deliver, and monitor safety training to ensure its proper and effective conduct and documents all such training
  • Participate effectively in the development and implementation of preventative and cyclic maintenance plans
  • Respond promptly to after-hours emergencies related to weather events, equipment failures, or any other facilities problems and/or coordinates that response with members of the staff
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operators license and operates all vehicles safely in compliance with Park policy
  • Operate all equipment and tools safely in accordance with Park policy

Possess a working knowledge of the Parks subject matter and themes

Serve as Acting Director of Operations as requested

Maintain proficiency in using word processing and spreadsheet computer software applications

  • Maintain effective oral and written communications skills using Standard English grammar and writing styles

Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality

Possess the ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays, and in critical situations as required

Maintain cordial, cooperative, and professional work relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public

Maintain a professional appearance consistent with Park standards

Maintain the ability to support multiple tasks simultaneously without close supervision

  • Assist other departments and participate in special events as needed
