Job Description
 

The City is a leader in historic preservation and urban design in the State of Texas.  With 15 historic districts and over 7,000 individually designated properties, Fort Worth has the largest collection of historically designated properties in the State of Texas.  In addition, staff administers six form based and design districts which have been recognized at the regional and national level.  As central city development continues to grow, so will the demand for additional design districts. 

The Planning and Development Department is seeking a Senior Planner, and the PRIMARY purpose of this position is to assist with administration of Historic Preservation in Fort Worth.  This consists of outreach and education, evaluating applications for alterations and new construction, updating of historic district standards and guidelines, Section 106 reviews, reviewing plans and facilitating development in historic districts. The SECONDARY purpose of this position is to provide assistance for the Downtown Design Review Board, Urban Design Commission.  This includes evaluating new development proposals, project facilitation, and management of key design related projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Read construction drawings (utilizing architectural and engineering scales as necessary), including architectural, electrical, mechanical, landscape and detail/specification sheets for conformance with applicable regulations ; create drawings using Adobe Creative Suites and/or hand illustrations; prepare clear and concise reports, summarize complex subject matter, communicate clearly and effetely verbally and in writing; facilitate development; and,
  • Assist the Historic Preservation Officer with implementation of the historic preservation plan, historic site tax exemption, special projects such as production of preservation-related educational brochures and documents, data analysis, preservation related presentations, tours and document historic resources; and,
  • Provide technical assistance to developers, city staff, community groups, and appropriate and federal agencies; provide staff assistance to top management staff on planning policy issues, land use decisions, and departmental issues; participates on a variety of committees as assigned, prepares and presents technical and activity reports, as well as other correspondence as appropriate and necessary.

Qualifications

Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Architecture/Architectural History, Planning, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture or Design, Public Administration, Urban Geography, or a related field AND five (5) years experience in planning with an emphasis on historic preservation, design review, and urban design.  Preference may be given to candidates with a Masters Degree.

The ideal candidate will have significant experience in architectural and/or design review board, development facilitation and review of development proposals for projects located in design based districts requiring urban design/architectural/ and public right of way review.  Examples of districts with design requirements are: historic, design overlay, conservation, and form based districts.

 

 

 
Job Preferences
 
  • Bilingual English/Spanish skills are highly desirable and preferred.
  • Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint skills required.  GIS and Adobe Creative Suite skills are highly desirable and preferred.
