Glen Canyon National Recreation Area

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is in Page, Arizona located on the Arizona-Utah border, 135 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, the nearest larger community. Wahweap Sub-District is located seven miles from Page. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100 in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Position: Primary purpose of this position is to provide craft and technical preservation support for planning and executing hands-on preservation projects at the Less Ferry/Lonely Dell Ranch Historic District, and to a lesser extent at other pre-contact to 20th century structures throughout Glen Canyon.  Projects focus on resources including vernacular log and masonry structures. Conducts on-site inspections, assessments, sampling programs, and investigations of historic and prehistoric structures to develop conditions reports, preservation plans, project statements, and maintenance and treatment guidelines. Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public.  Attends management and professional conferences and other events for the purposes of exchanging information, presenting technical and policy information, and advancing advocacy for park stewardship. Plans, directs, and executes projects dealing with architectural materials, structural integrity, and stabilization of structures.  Includes the project cost, materials, and time estimate; development of material lists; project scheduling and coordination; site set-up; and other duties associated with simple and complex projects.Independently investigates and records data pertaining to structures for the purpose of determining the original condition and configuration.  Some assignments require investigation of structures that have undergone major alterations, requiring knowledge of period design and craftsmanship.  Some assignments require knowledge of stabilization and conservation techniques.
