LCHIP and the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance

New Hampshire's Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP)is an independent state authority that makes matching grants to NH municipalities and non-profits to conserve and preserve New Hampshire’s most important natural, cultural and historic resources. The New Hampshire Preservation Alliance is a 501 © non-profit organization that supports and encourages the revitalization and protection of historic buildings and places which strengthens communities and local economies.

Internship Opportunity
Concord, NH

New Hampshires Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP) and the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance seek an intern to assist with the stewardship of historic resources for both organizations. The internship will provide practical experience in the field of historic preservation with an emphasis on:

·         Monitoring and documentation of historic properties

·         Building history and conditions

·         Interpretation of the Secretarys Standards

·         Development of outreach materials for property owners and general audiences

·         Legal restrictions of preservation easements

·         Support for educational workshops

The two organizations are both based in Concord, NH.  The managers will work with the intern to set the schedule of work, and maximize the efficiency and usefulness of the experience.

At LCHIP, the intern will review term preservation easements for previously funded LCHIP projects, visit the sites, and document the current condition of resources.  The intern will also be responsible for meeting with new building stewards and teaching them the LCHIP monitoring process. (24 hrs p/w)

At the Preservation Alliance, the intern will also assist with easement monitoring visits, complete stewardship reports and work with program staff to develop and update outreach materials for preservation easements and other programs. (14 hrs p/w)

Schedule: The intern will work a flexible schedule agreed upon by the intern, LCHIP and the Preservation Alliance, comprising 35-40 hours a week over the course of 12 weeks (June-August).  Work will be based at offices in Concord, NH but will include travel around the entire state.

Requirements: Applicants must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program for historic preservation or a closely aligned field.


The ideal candidate for this position will have strong understanding of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties and knowledge of preservation easements. The ability to work independently will be important  although there will also be many opportunities to work with LCHIP and the Preservation Alliances small, energetic staffs. Reliable transportation is required. Photography skills are needed. Housing is not provided as part of the internship. 

$10.00/hour, average 38 hours p/w for 12 weeks, plus mileage
