VHB has an exciting opportunity for an Archaeologist in the Environmental Services Division of our Northeast Region. The position will be based in the New York City or White Plains office and primarily serve our four New York offices (NYC, White Plains, Hauppauge and Albany). This individual will be a member of VHBs larger Cultural Resources Group and have opportunities to support projects throughout VHBs Northeast as well as New England regions.

 

VHBs passionate professionals include engineers, scientists, planners, and designers who partner with public and private clients in the transportation, real estate, institutional, and energy industries, as well as federal, state, and local governments.

 

Together, we work to improve mobility, enhance communities and economic vitality, and balance development and infrastructure needs with environmental stewardship.

 

Responsibilities

 

This position will assist in the preparation of environmental and planning-related documents for transportation, planning, and land development projects. The successful candidate will identify and evaluate archaeological historic properties in accordance with New York City Landmark Preservation Commission (LPC) City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR) criteria, NY State Historic Preservation Act Article 14, Section 14.09 regulations, and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended.

 

Duties include:

 

  • Identifying, documenting and evaluating archaeological historic properties
  • Assessing archaeological sensitivity
  • Preparation of documents in compliance with NEPA, SEQRA, CEQR,LPC Requests for Environmental Review, and regional SHPO project notifications and work products

 

Requirements

 

  • MA/MS in Archaeology with an emphasis on North America
  • 10+ years of professional archaeological experience
  • Experience as a Principal Investigator
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior professional qualifications and be a Registered Professional Archaeologist
  • Working knowledge of the Section 106 regulations, National Register criteria, New York City Landmarks law
  • Experience with NEPA, SEQRA, CEQR regulatory processes
  • Prior project work in New York City, Long Island, and in Hudson River Valley
  • Experience with Tribal consultation
  • Prior work in New Jersey or Connecticut is a plus
  • Section 4(f) experience a plus
