Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs

The Department of Cultural & Historic Affairs (DCHA) is responsible for the County of Passaic's historic sites, including the Dey Mansion, Lambert Tower, Lambert Castle, the John W. Rea House, the Westervelt-Vanderhoef House, the County Court House and all other County-owned property that is placed on the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places. Moreover, the Department coordinates cultural and historic programming and provides technical expertise on preservation projects.

Under the direction of the Director of the Department of Cultural &

Historic Affairs, the primary function of this position is to assist in the

planning and execution of daily museum functions; including but not

limited to exhibit installations, preservation of existing collections,

guiding visitors and performing clerical and other museum-related duties

as required and/or assigned.





Dey Mansion


  • Conduct schedule and unscheduled tours of the site and various exhibits to members of the public including school groups

  • Help prepare museum exhibits and collections for public display

  • Catalogue and conduct inventories of collections (including photographing and researching objects)

  • Assist in promotion the site via social media and the web

  • May assist in planning special events and exhibits

  • Under the guidance of the Director, answers routine inquiries about the museum, events, exhibits, and collections

  • Under guidance of the Director, may assist in training employees/staff in cataloguing, exhibit displays, and storing and cleaning of artifacts




  • Assist in maintaining office files and inventory records

  • Answers telephones and email inquiries

  • Provide customer service to visitors and ticket sale services

  • Required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the County of Passaic.




A portion of this position will also require work outside of the daily operations of the Dey Mansion site. These may include and are not limited to:


  • Programming events and exhibits at other County-owned historic sites

  • Public art programming which will include a summer concert series, Art in the Park, Tuesdays in the Plaza, etc.




  • Must be enrolled in an accredit college/university with a focus in history, anthropology, art history, museum studies, or related field OR graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in history, anthropology, art history, museum studies or related field;

  • Previous experience in museums, cultural programs, art spaces, etc. are preferred but not required;

  • Proficient computer skills including but not limited to: Office, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator;

  • Working weekends are required for this position. Depending on the event taking place, some nights may be required. Candidates will not be considered otherwise.





  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated office machines, which include a computer, calculator, typewriter, etc;

  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods of time;

  • Must be able to operate a variety of visual and audio aids;

  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, up to 30 lbs. Physical demands are for light work.
