Historic Survey Intern
Internship Opportunity
Leesburg, VA
$11-$15 hourly

The Leesburg Department of Planning and Zoning in Leesburg, Virginia, is seeking a qualified individual to assist in the update of the historic architectural survey for the downtown historic district.† The Old and Historic District is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register; the National Register of Historic Places; and is a local zoning overlay district with architectural controls.†† The project is an inventory update of the 500+ contributing resources in the historic district and will involve field surveys of existing properties.††† Work includes architectural photography, the completion of historic survey forms for each structure using the National Park Services CR Surveyor App; and development of a master data base.††††

Qualifications:† Applicants should be well-versed in the identification of architectural styles, details and features of historic buildings and structures in the Mid-Atlantic region and have some familiarity with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources cultural resource survey procedures and forms.† Experience using GIS and database development is desired but not mandatory.†† This position requires field work in an urban area including walking in various topographic and weather conditions.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Certificate Program in Preservation


  • Photography
  • Database creation and management
  • Knowleddge of Historic architectural styles

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Certificate Program in Preservation

  • Knowleddge of Historic architectural styles
  • GIS experience
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish

Supplemental Information: Work schedule is May-August 2017 depending on availability.
