Apprentice Architectural Historian

Roanoke, VA

Job Description: We are seeking candidates for a full-time apprentice architectural historian position. The successful candidate will assist with the research, documentation and evaluation of historic resources. Work will include the preparation of historic resource surveys, National Register evaluations and nominations for individual properties and historic districts, rehabilitation tax credit applications, historic design guidelines, and Section 106 review. The candidate must have the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, with direct contact to governmental agencies, clients, the public, and various project team members. The successful applicant will possess knowledge of MS Office programs and Adobe Creative Suite, write detailed architectural descriptions, conduct historical research, write and edit historic contexts and technical reports, and be able to read and review architectural drawings. Salary will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

Minimum Requirements: A qualified candidate must have a minimum of a Bachelors degree in architectural history, history, historic preservation, preservation planning, or a related field. Candidates must also have the potential to meet the Secretary of the Interiors Professional Qualifications Standards in Architectural History, Architecture, and/or Historic Preservation (36 CFR Part 61). Excellent research, writing, photography, and communication skills are essential, as well as the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment. Fieldwork, which often includes entering abandoned buildings and accessing remote sites, may require physical agility for activities such as walking, standing and kneeling.   Possession of a valid drivers license is required, as this position will require travel.
