This position works closely with the Federal Highway Administration and Maine Historic Preservation Commission to ensure compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act. This compliance is required for MaineDOT to comply with NEPA, and receive federal funding and permits. The position conducts and reviews architectural surveys and research on transportation projects to identify, photograph, and document historic resources and determine eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The position requires highly technical experience and knowledge regarding National Register Criteria for Evaluation and Aspects of Integrity. The position also requires assessing effects of the proposed transportation projects to those resources, and preparing documentation concerning such resources and effects to them in accordance with various State and Federal laws and regulations.

A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in Architectural History, Art History, Historic Preservation, or closely related field with course work in American Architectural History or - a Bachelors Degree in Architectural History, Art History, Historic Preservation and at least two (2) years of experience in research, writing, or teaching American Architectural History or Restoration Architecture at an academic institution, historical organization, agency, museum or other professional institutional or - have made a substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of American Architectural History.
