Ohio History Service Corps Community Surveyor Members provide service to Ohioans each year in historic site survey and helping local organizations put history to work in their community.

We're now accepting applications for our 2017-2018 program year, beginning in September! We have positions sites in the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Portsmouth. They will survey historic properties to identify and record historic themes and buildings, focusing on the mid-20th century, from 1940-1970, historic properties associated with African-American history, womenís history and other under-represented groups, and additional local survey priorities as appropriate in Ohio communities for the 2017-18 program service year. A working knowledge of architectural styles and terminology, Ohio history, and experience in research and writing is required. Applicants need to have a bachelorís degree in American History, Architecture, Architectural History, Historic Preservation or a related field. Educational and work or volunteer experience in historic preservation with knowledge of state and federal preservation programs is preferred. Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office products is required. Proficiency in Photoshop and/or WordPress preferred but not required. These AmeriCorps positions will be full-time with service from September 20, 2017 to August 31, 2018. Members must complete a minimum of 1,700 hours to be eligible for the education award. All Ohio History Service Corps members will receive training in volunteer management, meeting facilitation, train-the-trainer, collections digitization, community mapping, historic preservation, and heritage tourism/community-based economic development. They will also attend one statewide conference, which can include the Ohio Local History Alliance annual meeting and regional meetings as well as the Heritage Ohio conference. They will be required to participate in National Days of Service and AmeriCorps Week.

Community Surveyor Members are required to complete surveys of 100 historic properties to identify and record historic themes and buildings, focusing on the mid-20th century, from 1940-1970, historic properties associated with African-American history, womenís history and other under-represented groups. These surveys will provide new information about housing, subdivisions, public and commercial buildings and the work of area builders, developers and architects from the recent past. The survey work associated with under-represented groups will provide new information about historic properties associated with important individuals, groups, neighborhoods, and historic themes. Applicants need to have a bachelorís degree in American History, Architecture, Architectural History, Historic Preservation or a related field.
