The Preservation Society of Newport County is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1945 to preserve and protect the architectural heritage of Newport County, Rhode Island. The Preservation Society’s collection of historic houses together with their landscapes, fine and decorative arts constitutes a unique cultural museum spanning the colonial period through the Gilded Age. Each house museum plays a significant role in the effort to preserve and interpret the evolution of Newport’s artistic, social, and cultural past, which reflects developments on the national level. The Preservation Society is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, a designation achieved by only six percent of American museums. The Preservation Society of Newport County is a non-profit organization whose mission is to protect, preserve, and present an exceptional collection of house museums and landscapes in one of the most historically intact cities in America. We hold in public trust the Newport Mansions, which are an integral part of the living fabric of Newport, Rhode Island. These sites exemplify three centuries of the finest achievements in American architecture, decorative arts, and landscape design spanning the Colonial era to the Gilded Age. Through our historic properties, educational programs, and related activities, we engage the public in the story of America’s vibrant cultural heritage. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9am - 5pm, but may require seasonal or temporary adjustment for specific projects or departmental requirements.   The position may require occasional travel, evening, weekend, and/or holiday work.




The Preservation Society of Newport County is currently looking for a full-time Collections Care Technician with experience in all aspects of art handling, conservation housekeeping and preventative conservation.


The Preservation Societys collection consists of 11 historic museum buildings (seven designated National Historic Landmarks) and 60,000+ collections objects dating from antiquity to the mid-20th century


The Collections Care Technician is responsible for carrying out a wide variety of duties in connection with the correct handling, moving, installation and conservation cleaning of the collection, environmental monitoring and pest control, following best-practices at all times. The Collections Care Technician is supervised and will closely work alongside the Collections Manager, the Chief Conservator and Properties Caretaking Staff.




Duties include:


  • Undertake careful cleaning and contribute to housekeeping routines to ensure an appropriate level of care and presentation of collections and premises. This will include preservation cleaning of historic textiles and carpets, collection objects, historic woodwork, furnishings, painted interior finishes, display cabinets, and collection storage.

  • Assist Collections Manager with updating preservation cleaning plans and routines for each room/area/location/ historic house.

  • Liaise and communicate with the Collections Manager and the Chief Conservator with regard to any upcoming cleaning issues.

  • Work collaboratively with property caretakers and support them with the program of deep cleaning and other distinct cleaning projects within individual properties.

  • Communicate observed damages or risks to collection that require further action, and contribute to prioritization of preservation cleaning needs.

  • Safeguard historic structures and collections during building maintenance work.

  • Work closely with Collections Manager on all aspects of object storage.

  • Assist Collections Manager with pest control and environmental monitoring in the various houses.

  • Undertake transport of artifacts between houses and to and from the conservation studio. Undertake object moves, safe installation, picture hanging, and furniture rotations.

  • Assists with exhibition related tasks such as installation and de-installation, packing and un-packing of artifacts, specialized mounting techniques.

  • Assist with large scale condition surveys in collaboration with the conservation department.
