Historic Ithaca, Inc. (HI) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1966 to preserve and protect historic sites and districts in Ithaca and Tompkins County. Today, HI provides preservation education, advocacy, and technical services to individuals, businesses, academic institutions, and organizations throughout the county and Finger Lakes region. Historic preservation is viewed as integral to creating and sustaining liveable, walkable neighborhoods, which provide the foundation of our vibrant city and county. Historic Ithacaís advocacy efforts, both past and present, are widely known and highly regarded. Educational programming is diverse and engaging. Through HIís Significant Elements architectural salvage store, the organization offers job readiness training to youth. Position

The full time executive director is a leader with an excellent grasp of nonprofit business operations and a vision for HIís future that includes growth, engagement, and diversity. The executive director has overall strategic and administrative responsibilities while focusing on financial performance, organizational planning, community outreach, communications, and program development in order to fulfill Historic Ithacaís mission. The executive director works collaboratively with a Board of Directors and oversees a team of experienced and dedicated professionals.

Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • Provide strong management, vision and collaborative leadership to support the organization's mission, values and goals.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Board of Directors on matters of strategy, governance and fundraising. Provide administrative support to the Board and its committees.
  • Stay current on public policy, historic preservation practice, and other knowledge areas related to HI's mission.
  • Work in full partnership with staff to guide and support their professional growth. Ensure effective use of human resources.

Fundraising and Funding Development:

  • Continue and strengthen the organizationís annual campaigns.
  • Cultivate donors and new prospects as part of a major gift initiative.
  • Expand business support and corporate underwriting for projects and programs.
  • Develop new fundraising strategies based on the organizationís strengths and the communityís opportunities.
  • Secure grants to support programs and operations.

Communications and Outreach:

  • Ensure strong visibility for HIís mission and work through active community participation and regular media communications.
  • Build strong relationships with key donors, local organizations and agencies, and community leaders.
  • Participate with state and national preservation organizations and agencies.
  • Communicate the importance of historic preservation and its role in community development.

Program and Financial Management:

  • Prepare and monitor an annual budget that meets organizational needs and goals.
  • Manage the organizationís budget, accounting, internal controls, physical facilities, legal and policy compliance and risk management.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and assessment of programs, services, and activities that support Historic Ithaca's mission and goals. Track progress and regularly evaluate outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelorís degree required; Masters degree preferred
  • Minimum 3 years relevant experience in the fields of historic preservation, architecture, history, community planning or economic development
  • Accomplished manager with demonstrated leadership qualities and non-profit experience
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a Board of Directors
  • Proven track record in fundraising and development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the effective use of social media
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong, effective relationships with donors, foundations, grantors, and diverse constituencies and stakeholders
  • Capable of developing new and unique ways to improve operations and create growth opportunities
  • Able to participate in events and meetings held evenings and weekends

Salary range: $60,000 - $65,000 with generous health and other benefits
