As the second largest municipal planning department in the nation, the Los Angeles Department of City Planning is at the cutting-edge in urban practice nationally. The Department is responsible for guiding the long-range plans and reviewing local project applications. The Department's Office of Historic Resources (OHR) oversees the City's historic preservation programs, including 35 historic districts (Historic Preservation Overlay Zones), over 1,100 local landmarks (Historic-Cultural Monuments), and a comprehensive inventory of historic resources (HistoricPlacesLA), developed in part through the nation's largest local historic resources survey, SurveyLA. The Planning Assistant examination now includes a "selective certification" specifically for candidates with historic preservation experience.

A Planning Assistant does professional city planning work in long-range and policy planning, including citywide, community, and neighborhood planning; and project planning, including review, analysis, and clearance of land use proposals, development projects, and site plans.
