The Portsmouth Historical Association is a non-profit, entirely volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation of our city's proud culture and heritage. The Hill House Museum (circa 1825) is a four-story, antebellum English basement house. Although the home's architecture and furnishings have evolved through many generations of the Hill family, the basic integrity of the Hill House still remains. Few alterations have been made to the house over the years with the exception of connecting the original house to the once-separate kitchen. Also, "updating' such as indoor plumbing and types of heating and lighting occurred throughout the house as each generation left their visual mark. In 1956 the three remaining Hill sisters made a gift of the Hill house and all its contents to the Portsmouth Historical Association. The contents included every piece of furniture, china, crystal, pottery, carpet window dressings, paintings, ceramics, household goods, clothing and linen, personal letters and books. This immense collection is proudly displayed during the tours of the Hill house Museum.
