Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Senior Architectural Historian with a minimum of 8 years of experience to assist in our growing Cultural Resource practice. The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, environmental scientists, engineers and planners. The position will consist of technical work focusing primarily on Section 106 projects including historic structures documentation and evaluation, historic preservation plans, and historic structures reports. The preferred candidate will enjoy a variety of working conditions ranging from field efforts to office analysis. Responsibilities will include: 

  • Fieldwork to survey a variety of structure types
  • Documenting and evaluating historic structures
  • Writing property descriptions, historical narratives, significance statements, and National Register justifications
  • Preparing Determination of Effects Reports/Assessments of Effect
  • Preparing Historic Preservation Plans/Design Guidelines
  • Project and resource management

This position can operate from the corporate office in Hunt Valley, MD, Philadelphia, PA or Richmond, VA.

Required Skills

  • Ability to write at a professional level and present ideas in a well thought-out and comprehensive manner
  • Knowledge and understanding of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and Section 106 and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)is required; knowledge of Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act is preferred
  • Must enjoy working in the outdoors as required to complete job tasks


Required Experience

  • A Masters Degree from an accredited school in Historic Preservation (or similar field)
  • Meets, or exceeds, the requirements for an Architectural Historian and/or Historian under the Secretary of the Interiors Standards
  •  Experience successfully managing historic preservation survey or compliance projects or tasks
  • Experience working with federal agencies
  • Experience communicating and coordinating with clients
  • Experience with GIS and Adobe Acrobat Professional
  • Experience with digital photography (including SLR cameras)
  • FHWA Certified Section 106 Course
  • Experience with FCC 620/621 forms
  • Experience preparing for or conducting public meetings
  • Section 4(f) experience or training
