Mason Architects, Inc. is a full-spectrum architectural design and research firm located in Honolulu. Our staff of twenty-two includes six architectural historians. Our goal is to preserve the architectural heritage of our region and create new buildings that respect the client, the environment, and the cultural context. Our portfolio includes most of the preservation planning work in the Pacific, encompassing master plans, existing condition analyses, design guideline reports, historic structure surveys and inventories, cultural resource management plans, National Register nominations, and Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation. The firm combines this expertise with the design of new buildings for commercial, office, educational, and residential use. We also have designed park visitor facilities on sites that are culturally, visually, and environmentally sensitive.

Architectural Historian
Professional Opportunity
Honolulu, HI
$50-70K annually


  • Must meet SOI Professional Qualification Standards for Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Historic Architecture, or similar, which includes a graduate degree in architectural history or a closely related field of study.
  • Must have at least 5 years of professional writing experience in the preservation field (such as developing HABS/HAER documentation, National Register Nomination forms, historic context studies, etc.)
  • Experience undertaking historic inventory surveys
  • Experience evaluating buildings and structures using NRHP significance criteria
  • Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for Rehabilitation
  • Knowledge of NHPA Section 106 compliance and other relevant legislation, rules, and policies


Key Responsibilities:

  • Primary research on historic buildings and resources
  • Field work (note taking/photo documentation)
  • Undertaking historic inventory surveys
  • Writing HABS/HAER documentation
  • Writing National Register nomination forms


 Knowledge of and experience with the following are desired, but not required:

  • Evaluating historic resources on US military installations
  • Project Management: proposal writing, client interface, etc
  • Software programs: GIS, InDesign, Photoshop, Access
