Reston Historic Trust & Museum

The Reston Historic Trust (RHT) is an established community organization that preserves the past, informs the present, and influences the future of Reston, Virginia through its educational programs.   Our Goals are to engage the public in an exploration of community history, promote Reston as a destination point for tourism, collect, preserve, and interpret the artifacts and documents of Reston's history.   The Trust operates the Reston Museum & Shop which offers community exhibits, archives, walking tours, and public events including the annual Home Tour and the annual Founder's Day.

Position: Full-time Executive Director of the Reston Historic Trust and Museum, Reston, Virginia




Qualifications: A Master's degree or equivalent experience in urban planning, museum studies, history, architecture, or a related field. Strong organizational skills required. Experience in management and non-profit fundraising a plus. Fluency in the use of social media and related technologies desirable.




Supervision: Works directly under the direction of the Reston Historic Trust Board of Trustees.








Administration: Manages the daily operations of the Reston Museum including the recruitment and training of volunteer docents, financial transactions and oversight of the bookkeeper, donations to the Museum archives and cataloguing of materials, and the Museum shop. Represents the Trust in the Reston community and participates in community-wide initiatives.  Works with Marketing and PR Committee to coordinate all efforts, including press releases, printed materials, website and social media. Oversees the preparations for, and execution of, Founders Day in April and the Cardboard Boat Regatta in August.  Works with the Home Tour Committee to ensure a successful Home Tour in October.  Supports the Board and committees in all aspects of their operations. 




Development: Works with the Fundraising Committee to create and administer development initiatives to increase Museum revenue, including membership recruitment, planned giving, and grants.




Programs: Develops and provides educational programs in the schools and the community. Forms partnerships with other organizations to enhance program offerings.  Oversees the development of new exhibits, including materials from the Museum archives.
